Safina, Roddick knocked out

World number one Dinara Safina will have to wait for the Australian Open in January for her maiden Grand Slam title after she was knocked out of the US Open.

Safina who just made it to the third round at Flushing Meadows after struggling through the first two rounds lost in three sets to Petra Kvitova.

Also going out is Maria Sharapova who lost in three sets to unseeded Melanie Oudin. I thought Sharapova was going to make it to at least the second week but that did not happen.

In the men's draw Lleyton Hewitt lost once again to Roger Federer in four sets. After winning the first set I thought Hewitt was at least going to force the match to five sets but the world number one came firing back to win the last two sets.

Going out also in the third round is Andy Roddick who lost in five sets to John Isner. After reaching the final at Wimbledon, I thought Roddick had a good chance of reaching the latter stages at Flushing Meadows but he will have to try again next year.

I am keen to see how Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will fare at the US Open. I still think Federer will go all the way and win it again but after today's upsets you just never know.
